There are no secrets to online bookselling or to being a successful online bookseller, but there are many lessons that can be quite expensive to learn by trial and error. My suggestion for anyone contemplating becoming an online bookseller would be to get a detailed book about the business and learn all you can before starting. If you are already an online bookseller it would not hurt you to pick up a couple books on the subject for ideas and tips to being more profitable.

Selling new books on an Internet marketplace is a tough, low-margin business due to the aggressive discounting by Amazon of 30 to 40 percent for popular titles in recent years. Normally the biggest discount youll be able to get on new books from a wholesaler is around 45 percent. That leaves little room to cover costs like returns, lost packages, damaged books, and other mishaps.

Lets face it; we are a society of big spenders. We spend billions of dollars per year on everything from fast food burgers to trendy cars. However, the fact that we spend big doesnt mean we dont have an eye towards saving. As a matter of fact, quite the opposite is true. We like to save money nearly as much as we like to spend it and the vast majority of consumers are all too happy to take advantage of coupons, deals, and discounts.
